Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP)
"The Middle East Research and Information Project was
established in 1971. The original conception of MERIP was to provide
information and analysis on the Middle East that would be picked up
by the existing media. Issue number one of MERIP Reports, published
in May 1971, was a six-page mimeographed publication with three brief
articles. Throughout 1971 and 1972, the Report appeared irregularly,
and it was only in 1973 that the group made a commitment to publish
it on a regular basis. Since then, MERIP has never looked back and,
in the words of French journalist Eric Rouleau, "No person, specializing
or not in Middle Eastern affairs, can afford ignoring Middle East
Report." Professor Rashid Khalidi, a leading American scholar, says
"Middle East Report is the best periodical (in English) on the Middle
East -- bar none." MERIP is a non-profit, non-governmental organization
based in Washington, DC. A completely independent organization, it
has no links to any religious, educational or political organizations

from subscriptions to Middle East Report, small grants from European

What are we swallowing?
Sometimes this is the question we really do need to
ask ourselves. When it comes to the latest news in science, medicine,
and health, the Establishment has an unhealthy habit of feeding us
false information.
Wikileaks
"Wikileaks is developing an uncensorable Wikipedia for
untraceable mass document leaking and participatory analysis. Our
primary interests are oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet
bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but we expect to be
of assistance to peoples of all countries who wish to reveal unethical
behavior in their governments and corporations. We aim for maximum
political impact; this means our interface is identical to Wikipedia
and usable by non-technical people. We have received over 1.2 million
documents so far from dissident communities and anonymous sources...
We believe that transparency in government activities leads to reduced corruption, better government and stronger democracies. All governments can benefit from increased scrutiny by the world community, as well as their own people. We believe this scrutiny requires information.
Historically that information has been costly - in terms of human life and human rights.
Wikileaks opens leaked documents up to stronger scrutiny than any media organization or intelligence agency can provide. Wikileaks provides a forum for the entire global community to relentlessly examine any document for its credibility, plausibility, veracity and validity. Communities can interpret leaked documents and explain their relevance to the public...
We believe that it is not only the people of one country that keep their government honest, but also the people of other countries who are watching that government. That is why the time has come for an anonymous global avenue for disseminating documents the public should see."
