President George Bush in focus

updated july 10th 2007

Video of an interview with Bush aired on Irish tv - but apparently it was banned in America! (Uploaded to YouTube November '06). The inconsistencies, distortions, hypocrisies and evasions are just too blatant to be worthy of comment...

Paying lip-service to political correctness I should clarify that whilst the sentiments expressed on this page are quite clearly anti-Bush (and, by implication, anti the entire Bush regime), it does not necessarily follow that I am anti-American.

Up until the last American Presidential election I could have freely stated that with a clear conscience.

But, if the American people were so opposed to his knavish tricks, and were thoroughly disgusted by his deceits and war-mongering, how come they returned him to office with such a resounding majority?
(And before similar questions are asked of us Brits in returning Tony Blair to office for a further term, dwell for a moment on the fact that the last General Election saw a turnout of something like 61%. Of the 646 seats in Parliament, Labour won only 355 leaving a significant 291 to be won by other parties. And of the constituencies that Labour did win, in many cases it was with a substantially reduced majority. What this in effect means is that Tony Blair is now governing this country with a mandate from a minority of the population - arguably a far less compelling mandate than that currently possessed by the Hammas Government of Palestine! So much for British "democracy"!)

Now it has to be observed that, as a direct effect of Bush being so returned to office, the world is once more witness to horrendous atrocities being perpetrated in the Middle East by an American-supported state.
Just how long are we going to have to wait before the American people finally call him to account?

Nor is it completely acceptable to argue that Americans are relative "innocents" to the true facts, courtesy of the abysmal bias being consistently demonstrated by the mainstream US media. Is the internet not available in the United States? Do they not have access to alternative news sources? Can they not think and work things out for themselves?

And whilst I'm engaged in doing this update, I may as well briefly point out that although some of the links below target some possibly less-than-credible sites (consequently the "information" they offer needs to be taken with a pinch of salt), there are others well worth consideration. Use your discretion!

original text...

Here in the UK we tend not to take too much notice of American Presidents, and George Bush was no exception.
George W BushWe were somewhat intrigued (and not a little amused) by the shenanigans that accompanied his coming to office, but the predominant attitude here was "Ah well, that's America for you, even their screw-ups have to be big ones".
When the results of that election were finally "agreed", some of us over here — when we weren't actually laughing over the antics — couldn't avoid the distinct impression that the whole thing had somehow been fudged or, to put it bluntly, "fixed", but it rapidly receded into the background as other matters closer to home occupied our attention.

Then the unforgettable events of September 11th 2001 occurred, and the hearts of many of us reached out to America. For a few brief weeks it was as though America and Britain were one, and the majority here were as anxious as any American that the perpetrators of that horrendous crime should be brought to justice.

Those events inevitably thrust President Bush once more into the limelight, but this time it seemed he wanted to remain centre-stage, and all that he did, and continues to do, has kept him firmly fixed there.

Now it has to be said that with his announcement of his "War on Terror", and his unrelenting prosecution of the bombing campaign in Afghanistan (to say nothing of certain of his other activities seemingly unrelated to the "War on Terror") some disquiet began to creep into the minds of the hitherto well-disposed British public.

We've not been overly impressed by his arrogant and cavalier attitude toward the opinions of the peoples and leaders of other countries. Nor are we impressed by his increasingly obvious embodiment of double standards. We were certainly not impressed by his illegal war on Iraq, nor by his dragging our country along with him.
On the whole, we're inclined to think that he's probably not a good choice as a person to look after the interests of the American people, or to represent them on the world stage.

As time has passed so unanswered questions have accumulated — questions regarding his true motivations, his integrity, and even his intelligence!.

None of this of course is really our affair — or it wouldn't be, were it not for the fact that the course upon which he has embarked threatens to jeopardise the security and well-being of everyone, wherever they may be.

So yes, President Bush has achieved his ambition of being permanently set in the limelight. Unfortunately that light, that glaring light, is beginning to reveal things that he would probably have sooner had remain cloaked in darkness.

OK, let's get to know our friend Mr Bush…

We have to ask ourselves, is this really the man to take the moral high ground?

Now here's the real voice of America…

"Bush has brought shame on American democracy in the eyes of a stunned world.

His seizure of power did not come about suddenly. The American right wing, backed by powerful corporations, has been crafting its takeover for decades. The Bush coup d’etat is a consummation of the anti-democratic political tradition that gave us McCarthyism, the Vietnam War, and Watergate.

Even though Americans have voted for a Democratic Chief Executive for three consecutive presidential elections, the right wing now exercises almost complete control over the Federal Government. Corporate money rules the Republican Party, and it gags the Democratic Party as an effective opposition.

Flaunting his illegal appointment to the Presidency, Bush is rapidly enacting an extremist agenda that jeopardizes our social and planetary survival. His regime, like his ascendancy to office, subverts democratic governance for the profit of special corporate interests and right-wing ideological aims.

The Bush regime is a declaration of war on our democracy. We are fighting back. We call for the citizenry to restore social justice and create a way of life that will sustain our planet. We act out of love for our country and belief in its founding principles."
