The mainstream media (national newspapers, radio and tv) still rank
as principal news-bringers. Unfortunately, their reportage simply
can't be relied upon for objectivity or accuracy.
Countless are the ways in which their presentation of the "news" is
both biased and misleading; such that its difficult to avoid the conclusion
that they're serving a hidden agenda.
However, the increasing popularity of the internet means that we, ordinary
joe public, can access alternative sources for greater in-depth (and
frequently more accurate) accounts of the news-stories of the day.
This is not to say that these alternative sources are any less biased,
but that their bias frequently leans in the opposite direction, so
at least it goes some way toward redressing the balance.
And what we can all be doing to challenge the unacceptable degree of "spin" in the mainsteam media is to encourage all our friends and acquaintances into increasing their access to and engagement with internet-based resources.
